Elaine Gilmour: Blogging for ESL

I’d like to just say a big thank you to Elaine Gilmour for hosting her blog with me. Originally, she signed up some months ago with me, but because of her busy schedule, she didn’t have as much time to devote to her blog. In fact, I found that she has also been using a .mac website, quite a different animal to Wordpress.

Elaine is a professor in ESL in Sendai University. She is developing her blog to publish her research as well as reach out to other professionals in the ESL/EFL world (which is widely dispersed around the globe!).

Of the 50 or so themes installed by default that she has to choose from, she opted for “Lush for Wordpress” which is quite an attractive website design. With her blog, she got lots of extra hosting power for her blog, including sub-domains to her main domain (a much shorter address than her .mac address!), a wonderful blogging tool – Wordpress (keeps getting better with every update!), lots of space and bandwidth, and as much help as I can give her! Here’s an interesting story from the local press in Taiwan.

Over 84 percent of office workers polled in Taiwan have great interest in starting their own business, according to the results of a survey released yesterday by an online employment service provider.

As a part owner in my own business for the last seven years, I’ll say it has been a major challenge in ways that you wouldn’t expect, as well as ways you might realize.

  • It’s a time sink – Holidays and sick days are much fewer if you’re the boss;
  • Managing money is a continual activity;
  • You can never really take your eyes off the ball;
  • There’s no real sense of “I made it”;
  • and You have a lot more control of your day to day affairs!

Would I change it? I don’t think so. If I weren’t running this business full-time, I’d surely have something else up my sleeve (I have usually had several pokers in the fire at one time!). Are the sacrifices worth it? I don’t know. Yet. I hope so.

OIOpublisher plugin: Enabling bloggers to make money

John Chow’s blog recently featured a great link to a wonderful plugin that will help bloggers earn a little more money by allowing advertisers to go direct to the blogger. I haven’t installed it yet, because I’m still working through Payperpost and Sponsored Reviews.

However, with the way things are going with both of these companies (though for different reasons), I may be looking for the exit in both cases. This alternative should be worth researching. Visit John’s Blog to find out more about the plugin.

Simon Emery’s OIOpublisher Direct isn’t the first to offer a Wordpress Plugin that allows you to sell your own reviews or text links. I’ve profiled two such plugins already; Wordpress BankRoll and WP Text Ads. However, OIOpublisher is far superior to the other plugins and best of all, it’s free. It’s interesting to note that though he thought highly of the plugin, he himself is unlikely to be using it any time soon!
