Blogging Network: It happened by accident!

It looks like my WordPress network is now growing. I thought I would have just two blogs… in reality, it’s much more like 6.  And so, presenting Kenneth’s Blogging Network (part 1!).

Obblogatory Actually, this is the one that started it all. It used to be hosted right here. But then the topics expanded, and the focus became much less Investing and much more general blogging. Oddly, it had a PR5! Now, I’m struggling along with a PR3! Oh, well. I didn’t know what a PR5 was worth then. Posting schedule is approximately 2-4 a week!

HKJTEFL Perhaps this is my latest experiment as I focus on EFL, which is my area of expertise. It’s called EFL in Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan (hence the name). But there aren’t many posts, and I’m not happy with the theme yet, either. I used to have another ESL blog, so I uploaded the posts from there, but I’ve only posted a few so far. Posting schedule is about 1-2 a week.

Nozkidz.com is the website that is co-blogged by three (or four!?) writers, mostly teachers from our school. We upload stuff including videos, audio, lots of pictures of student work, and a wide range of other stuff about our language school. It varies from one or two posts a week, to one or two posts a day. It’s not very well marketed yet, either.

So, including this one, that makes four blogs! There are also a bunch of other sites I administer on more or less a regular basis. Geez… I really got to focus more!

Starting Up: Again – reviving an old blog…

I’ve been blogging for more than a few years… But with one thing and another, it hasn’t been a regular activity of mine … not until about November of last year.

I recently had an old blog that had been redundant at a subdomain of this one. So I decided to revive that blog, by giving it its own URL and starting up the blog again on a regular basis. It’s kind of like a new blog in some ways, so I was thinking about blogging about how to set one up on this blog, but using that blog as an example.

So I’ll be starting a regular course, once or twice a week to bring new people into blogging. If you do like the course, subscribe to the blog, which you can do at the top of the page! I’m anticipating a series of about 30 posts, so do check back. Lesson one is tomorrow!

Vent: Do you hate updating your Windows + Software?

Given the number of programs I had installed recently, all this updating was getting a pain in the neck: OS updates, Office updates, Nero updates, Winamp, Virus… Never a day goes by but there’s something needed updating. And don’t get me started on Adobe Reader updates!

So why is updating a hassle?

  • a. you’re usually in the middle of doing something when the nag screen starts;
  • b. the download takes so long that you don’t want to turn off your machine;
  • c. the install starts but DEMANDS that you close ALL your other work BEFORE it does anything;
  • d. you are required to RESTART your machine before you can do anything else;
  • e. and COMPLICATIONS through lost functionality (intentional or accidental), screwed up installs, crashed machines, repair bills, etc.

So, now that my network is behind a separate firewall, and each computer is protected by appropriate software, I no longer update my PCs software at each and every opportunity. I know this isn’t the ‘safest’ option, but it’s the most efficient for me. Why? I bought the computers to help me run my business, NOT for me to run the computers and forget about my clients… As soon as something steals that focus, it’s no longer a help, it’s a hindrance.

So vent away, guys and gals! What do you hate about your current software or OS? Let’s tear strips of these software companies!
