Driving Offline Users to your Business

It’s quite tricky to drive offline traffic to your business if your location is less than optimal. But it can be done. A newsletter is one of the ways we’ve tried to create additional interest in our business and our blog. (Click to see the fullsize image of page 1).

newsletter

Why a newsletter?

We chose a newsletter for a number of reasons over a regular flyer:

  1. One was the we wanted to start to ‘educate’, ‘inform’ and ‘interest’ our readers in English language learning for children as much as advertise. Of course, we could not leave out the advertisements, but we put them on the inner pages rather than the outer pages so that people would have something to read BEFORE they go to our advertising. We wanted our readers to read something that was intrinsically interesting.
  2. Another was that a newsletter is a regular thing, so people can begin to expect to read it at regular intervals and we can begin a conversation with people who aren’t our customers.
  3. A third reason is that it can make our business seem much larger than it really is. With the internet, our newsletter becomes global instantly, available to billions of people worldwide.
  4. Lastly, it was able to reflect what was going on in our business much more timely than a standard flyer. Its seasonality is important, as our business is seasonal!

There were other lesser reasons, but together they made a lot of sense!

Format of newsletter

We also made the format small using A5 format but printing on A4 double sided. We created a four page newsletter that looks quite effective. You can see from the JPEG the first page. It’s difficult to get the full impression nevertheless. Of course, we can only print in b&w at the moment, but if it becomes a big enough phenomenon, other things become possible.

Putting it together

It’s not difficult to put one together but you have to have a certain mastery of the PC tools at your disposal, especially Word or Publisher (Writer or Scribus, too). Also, if you have a photocopier, you can reproduce the newsletter quite cheaply and quite effectively. Local printshops will do color reproduction but I have yet to investigate that option fully!

Distribution: Targeted is better!

Getting your newsletter out there is sometimes a problem. We built an advertising station for our newsletter, and placed it in several locations suitable for flyers. People would go there and pick up flyers themselves. Also, we sometimes distribute them on the street ourselves by hand. That works well, too!

How do you reach customers? Do you have offline media, too? What other ways are there?

Getting Started in Publishing: DIY is the way to go!

For those of you enticed into the world of Marketing/selling teaching materials: self-publishing, I was very intrigued with the posting and the poster, because of his unusual methods for getting started. Instead of writing a book and contacting a publisher, and hoping that the publisher might even read his book, this author turned the tables on the publishing industry by writing up a book from material he already had, refining it, and selling hundreds of copies to his students!

The fact that he could sell to a steady market meant that he was able to demonstrate a marketable product that publishers could resell! They didn’t have to worry about if the product was marketable, it already was! Check out Rambling Rube’s post for that information. In fact, the whole thread is an interesting discussion, albeit focused on ESL, but the principles are absolutely correct.

Comments on publishing? What have you published?

Books and MLM: two things that don’t normally go together

I was browsing through my day’s websites as usual, when I came across this odd business. Someone is trying to turn books into the next multi-level marketing business! Geez, I thought, how is that possible? The margins in publishing aren’t as great as in other industries, like cosmetics, pharmaceuticals or whatnot… how can it be done? Also, books aren’t as sexy as other products, so…

Well, I visited Bookwise to find out what it was all about… It’s basically a book catalogue with a monthly required purchase which fulfills your membership requirement. In addition, you will get some other stuff like e-books and advice.

So, anyway, I found the video, which is long (very long, in fact). It took ages to download, but it showed two prominent people, Richard Paul Evans, a well-known author and Richard Allen, author of “Multiple Streams of Income” fame talking about Bookwise. They were very enthusiastic about the club, and all of the value that they would pour into your joining the club! The fact that it would cost only$35+pp made it sound like it was the best thing since sliced bread

I must admit I’m intrigued by this! Mostly because of the idea that I could use books to interest people in topics close to my heart! Mmm. So how does the deal stack up?

The deal is quite simple: To join the club as an Associate, you will pay a $39 enrollment fee. Thereafter, you’re charged $35 per month (plus applicable taxes and shipping), with an annual renewal fee of $30.

So your first bill will be $74, and annual purchases will be around $450-460 for your membership plus membership requirement. You will, of course, get a starter kit including a business guide, instructional content, promotional material including stickers and brochures, and more

There are other benefits, including one hardcover book, you can purchase additional books from the BookWise catalog at wholesale prices – cheaper than Amazon.com’s (and I checked several books), a newsletter every month, as well as discounted entry to BookWise conferences, etc.. etc.. There are also additional charity links that might appeal, too!

I’m intrigued by this and I think that it could be a powerful tool in the right hands to make money! But, as with most MLM schemes, most people are unlikely to make as much! Still, very intriguing, … Have any of you been involved with Bookwise at all? What were your experiences? Share with me! I’m considering purchasing a membership, out of curiosity! I love hardback books!
