Buzz: Links, Articles, and More: Find out what InvestorBlogger has been reading recently

I’m doing a buzz for my own new website. It’s simply called “Links, Articles and more“. The website is designed not as a set of bookmarks, but as a kind of reading diary.

As I love the one click nature of Wordpress, I decided to clip more of my reading and browsing habit for other people! If it’s good or interesting or education or whatever, and worthy of note, I will publish it here. There are at the moment no comments, no details, just a link!

I also liked the fact that it had its own RSS feed, which means that I can place links to the post on the front page of my primary blog in the sidebar.

Happy Reading.

Buzz: Never Be Ashamed When You Promote Your Business

100 1020As many of you know, I’m a TESOL Teacher working and living in Taiwan. But I don’t work in a regular school, I own what’s generally called a supplementary education language school teaching TESOL to children. I’ve done this for many years, and I love the job. I love the challenge, but would appreciate a holiday… Anyway, today’s story!

On the left you can see one of my favorite classes (but shh! don’t tell them that! they might get ‘big’ ideas! and then I’ll have to double their homework!!)

It was many years ago, when I first hit the streets touting my old boss’s business. She was needing advertising and straightforward word of mouth at that to increase enrolments, so we hit the schools with demos and performances, etc. to increase our visibility. But I remember being vaguely embarrassed doing that kind of work… I don’t know why. I think it was ‘beneath me’ in some way.

Recently, I had the ‘opportunity’ to witness other people handing out flyers, and when I looked at them, it was obvious that they hadn’t done this before! They were stiff, unnatural, perhaps trying to get out of doing, and definitely not enjoying it! It took me straight back to the times I used to feel similarly embarrassed! Looking on from the outside still provided me with little insight!

100 1280Today, however, we went to a local school to hand out flyers! And I had to do the same thing! And it was great! We passed out over 100 flyers in twenty minutes! They were flying out of my hands, and they weren’t THAT attractive if you know what I mean! But the fact that we enjoyed ourselves really helped to soothe our self-concsiousness about this.

Then I realized: I had nothing to be ashamed of, nothing could harm me! And it was all good fun! So go ahead! Tell people about your good works, your fun, and your business! Do in good humor! Don’t apologize for doing it and NEVER, EVER be embarrassed! People need to hear your good news… and there is NO ONE better qualified to tell the story than YOU!

We had a great time last Halloween! As we really did go out and show people who we were… some very scary ghosts! Look at the photograph to see if you can see some of our ‘little devils’!

Or ME, as it was today! So, go out and tell the world the great things you do! And if they don’t want to hear, MOVE right on to the next person! Some will want to read or listen to what you want to tell them! But be polite, be sensitive, push when you can, but stop when you sense you’re getting nowhere (sometimes rather quickly!).

And always, always SMILE! Your positive humor, excitement and warmth will radiate out and people will come to you!

Buzz: The Blue xB – how Not to design your Blog

BlueXB

Finally, I found the last entry to my May Buzz Competition: The Blue xB. I lost the blog address AND the email address of the blogger, so I had no way to find it! I eventually found courtesy of Technorati!

Time for your Buzz!

This blog has been around for a while, but due to the way the blog is administered, it’s difficult to find out anything about the blog itself, the blogger, or anything else at all. In fact, it’s difficult to believe that this is a blog.

Here are the problems I found that I think would be best addressed by all bloggers, if you want your blog to be recognized as such.

  1. There’s no way to navigate easily around your blogs, except via the categories/tags in each post, and the bottom of the page link – get your categories in your sidebar! Some posts don’t have any tag.
  2. There’s no search function for the posts in your blog – why not? Let visitors search your blog so that they can find stuff that they want, remember the blog is for your visitors to enjoy! Google provide a search function that can help you to do this. Google does allow you to search this site as any. Click here to see what I mean… but why should I have to go to Google to do that when the function is built into WP.
  3. Give your blog some personality, please! At least make it something that readers can recognize! There are hundreds of ways to set this up! You can even create a persona like Kumiko Suzuki‘s blog has done! I’m not even sure she’s a female blogger – but it’s still a great blog! At least add an about page! Or change the theme!
  4. Allow visitors to respond to comments! Right now, in some posts comments are closed, in others registration is required but registration is closed. That’s a pity – if you are worried by spam, you can easily install anti-spam plugins

In fact, the more I look at this blog, the more I believe it’s purpose is simply to post for money, not to post for readers. I do hope PPP bloggers aim for something more than dollar signs in their eyes. And I seriously hope I’m wrong… so take a look for yourself. Adding categories, search, some blog personality, and interactive elements would all go a long way to alleviating that impression, and creating a small community of readers sharing your interests, thoughts and passions!
