Sponsored Themes: On the out and out?

A round of applause for Mark Ghosh of Weblogs Tool Collection for taking a stand against sponsored themes. Before WordCamp all sponsored themes should be removed from themes.wordpress.net.

It seems that the whole WordPress Sponsored Themes affair is now coming to something of a conclusion. Many sources of themes, including Wordpress Themes and Weblogs Tool Collection are eschewing the paid for support for themes as inappropriate for the otherwise open source efforts of WordPress and its themes collections.

Do you think this is appropriate or not? Did you have a bad experience with themes when you were using them? Do you think sponsored themes are acceptable to you?
