Apologies: WP update - updating to Version 2.7

Apologies to all, but we’re updating the server. The WP-MU officially ended, and we’ve migrated back to Wordpress. In the meantime, we’re redoing the overall design of the site over the next few days, so we’re hoping to have a new theme soon. Also, we had some ‘problems’ when we initially upgraded: including missing images, a bunch of spam, some missing widgets, and a bunch of smaller stuff! Sorry. But we’ll get these ironed out.

We’ve now removed the old install, reinstall the original Wordpress, updated all the plugins and Wordpress, imported all the previous sub-blogs, corrected the URLs, restored the images, removed the spam, removed some useless or broken plugins… but there’s quite a list of stuff to sort out, still. Should be up and running by January 1st.

Apologies: DDoS Attack on my Server Box

Apologies for the outage over the last 24 hours. Our server was under attack from a DDOS, meaning that all the sites on the server were unavailable. Having contacted Bluehost, they said it’s pretty difficult to know the duration of the attack. But it’s obviously still happening as some web-services on the server are still unavailable, such as the CPanel.

This is a salutory reminder: backup your posts, your database and your online files so that if the shit hits the fan, you’ll be okay. I have made a few decisions as the result of this, including backing up all my files, shifting my domains, and returning to Wordpress original flavor. It’s just to risky otherwise.

I was staggered but…

I haven’t updated my online income in a long time. In fact, it’s sat on my sidebar for ages showing just under US$12,000. Well, last night I decided to do a conservative estimate of the income since September: it’s now a tad under US$16,000. And the pace of income is now picking up somewhat in the past 12 months, even despite the recent hiccups on the stock market when my dividends got nearly wiped out. It’s been a triple whammy, though.

Interest rates are now diving: good for loans (I’ll be saving US$30~US$60 per month, soon); bad for savings.
Dividends: some divs are down, others are suspended. Fortunately some still trickle in.
Advertising: It’s difficult to get advertisers, and deals tend to be smaller than before. Other advertiser dependent streams are still suffering.
Profits from Business: These could be down, too.

But on the positive side for 2009: I’ve now developed an overall plan for income, I know have some idea how to increase each of these to make up for the shortfalls, and I’m quietly optimistic for 2009. Though it will be a difficult year, there are going to be good opportunities even now!

So it’s pretty much on all fronts these days. Income streams are shrivelling. But at least they are still present. So be careful out there! These are mean days!

I know I would. Pity that I can’t get this in Taiwan. Even if I could, I don’t know how I would actually buy stuff for it! But at least you can enjoy it!

Updates on InvestorBlogger

There are changes afoot, as you may have surmised.

I’m now working on separating several sub-blogs on this blog to separate blogs in the near future. To that end, and to prevent further incessant spamming on this blog, all commenting has been turned off. The spamming of this blog is getting ridiculous. I don’t have adequate anti-spam tools in place at the moment, so it’s easier not to deal with the problem.

Blogging Travails has moved to its own blog @ eeeblogger.com.
PF has moved to dollartraveler.com
Carnivals and Top-20 has moved to makingrealmoneyblog.com (which is already PR1).
Sticky Rice has been discontinued for the time being and merged with Obblogatory.com

InvestorBlogger Dot Com will remerge the existing posts from the sub-blogs into its primary thread. Then posting will continue as before. There is much to discuss and much to discover. Additionally, the ‘new’ blog will be converted to Wordpress 2.7 and will be much easier to maintain as a result. Wordpress MU was an interesting experiment, but not really worth the hassle and the limitations. Wordpress original now makes file and plugin much easier than ever obviating the need for Wordpress MU for those of us who maintain several or more blogs.

Have you upgraded to WordPress 2.7?

Watch this video about Wordpress 2.7. I did upgrade one blog, but discovered a couple of problems with the new version.

the DashBoard link at the top just doesn’t always link back to the homepage. There is a solution, but it’s a bit geeky.
And the Dashboard sidebar just disappeared. Some plugins are doing this. Lighter Menus v.2.7.1 and up are currently doing this.

So when you upgrade (and it’s a beautiful upgrade), remember, turn off your plugins, back up your database (and know how to restore it), back up your file structure, too: Then upgrade. Common sense, it’s true. But if you did it like I did (on a hosting plan with auto-update), you’ll find all sorts of surprises instore!
